How wig length is measured
Retailers measure a wig's length straight, from the top of the hair to the ends. On a head the hair starts at the crown, so the common rule of thumb on a 5′5″ figure is: 10″ at the chin, 14″ at the shoulders, 18″ at the armpits, 20″ at the bra strap, 24″ mid-back, 26″ at the waist and 30″ at the hips. On someone taller the same length ends higher, and on someone shorter it ends lower.
Waves and curls take up length. A straight wig hangs at close to its number, body wave a little shorter, and curly and kinky curly textures noticeably shorter, sometimes by a quarter or more. Where does a 16 inch wig fall?
Just below the shoulders on someone 5′5″ tall. On the usual chart 14″ reaches the shoulders, 20″ the bra strap, 26″ the waist and 30″ the hips. Shorter people see a length fall lower, taller people higher.
Why does a curly wig look shorter than its length?
Wig lengths are measured with the hair pulled straight. Waves and curls spring up, so a curly wig hangs noticeably shorter than its stated length, and a kinky curly one shorter still.
What wig length looks the most natural?
Shoulder length or shorter is the easiest everyday length: it is lighter, quicker to style and close to what most people grow. Longer lengths look striking but need more care.
