A curly wig fresh out of the box is a thing of beauty: springy, defined curls from root to tip. Three weeks later, many people find theirs has turned into a frizzy, tangled halo with no pattern left. The hair didn't fail. The wash day did.
Curly wig hair has no scalp feeding it oil, and its spiral shape makes it naturally drier and more tangle-prone than straight hair. Washing it like straight hair — rubbing, brushing, piling it on top of your head, towel-drying — breaks up the curl pattern and strips the moisture that keeps curls defined.
This is a complete wash day routine for curly, kinky curly, deep wave and water wave wigs. Done properly, it takes about an hour of hands-on time plus drying, and it'll keep your curls looking close to new for months.
How often to wash
- Every 7–10 wears for most people.
- More often if you use a lot of product, sweat a lot, or the hair smells or feels coated.
- Less often if you wear it rarely — and refresh between washes with water and leave-in instead.
Over-washing dries curls out. Under-washing lets product build up and weigh them down. Somewhere in between is right.
What you need
- Sulfate-free, moisturising shampoo (or a co-wash cleanser).
- A rich, slippery conditioner.
- A deep conditioning mask (every wash or every other wash).
- A leave-in conditioner.
- A curl cream, gel or mousse for definition.
- A light oil for the ends.
- A wide-tooth comb, or just your fingers.
- Sectioning clips.
- A spray bottle of water.
- A wig stand or mannequin head.
- A microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt.
You'll find conditioners, masks, leave-ins and curl products in our hair care category. Our guide to the best shampoo and conditioner for human hair wigs explains what to look for on the label.
Step 1: Detangle before you wet it
This is the most important step. Water tightens tangles, so never wet a tangled curly wig.
- Put the wig on a stand.
- Spray it lightly with water and apply a generous amount of conditioner or detangling spray.
- Section it into four to six parts and clip them.
- Working one section at a time, finger-detangle from the ends, then use a wide-tooth comb, slowly working up toward the roots.
- Hold the hair above the tangle so the comb doesn't pull at the knots or wefts.
- Twist or loosely braid each section once it's detangled.
Step 2: Wash gently, in sections
- Fill a basin with lukewarm (not hot) water, or use the shower with low pressure.
- Dilute your shampoo in a cup or bottle of water.
- Keep the sections twisted and wet them thoroughly.
- Apply the diluted shampoo to the cap and the inside of the wig first, where sweat and oil collect.
- Smooth the shampoo down each section, from root to tip. Squeeze, don't rub. Never scrub in circles or pile the hair on top of the head.
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, again smoothing downward.
Step 3: Condition and deep condition
- Apply conditioner generously to each section, from mid-length to the ends. Keep heavy conditioner off the lace, where it can loosen knots.
- Finger-detangle gently while the conditioner is in — the slip makes it easy.
- For a deep condition, apply a mask, cover the wig with a plastic cap, and leave it for 20–30 minutes.
- Rinse with cool water, which helps smooth the cuticle and define curls.
Step 4: Apply leave-in and stylers while soaking wet
Curls form while the hair is wet. Applying products to damp or dry hair gives far less definition.
- Gently squeeze out excess water — but leave the hair soaking wet.
- Apply leave-in conditioner to each section.
- Apply a curl cream for soft definition, or a gel for stronger hold and more defined clumps.
- Rake the product through with your fingers, then smooth each section between your palms.
- Scrunch upward to encourage the curl pattern.
- For extra definition, twirl small sections around your finger.
Step 5: Dry without disturbing the curls
- Blot gently with a microfibre towel or a cotton T-shirt — scrunch upward, never rub.
- Put the wig on a stand and leave it to air-dry, away from direct heat and sunlight. Drying can take several hours.
- Don't touch it while it dries. Handling damp curls causes frizz.
- To speed things up, use a blow dryer with a diffuser on low heat and low speed, cupping sections of curls in the diffuser.
- Make sure the cap is completely dry before storing or wearing.
Step 6: Finish
- Once completely dry, if you used gel, there may be a "cast" — a slightly stiff, crunchy feel. Scrunch it out gently with a drop of oil on your hands.
- Apply a light oil to the ends.
- Fluff the roots with your fingers or a pick for volume.
Between wash days
- Refresh daily with a spray of water and leave-in, then scrunch.
- Re-define frizzy sections with a little curl cream, twirled around your finger.
- Never brush dry.
- Detangle gently with fingers when the hair is damp.
- Store on a stand at night, or loosely "pineappled" — gathered on top — under a satin bonnet if it's on your head.
Our deep wave and water wave definition guide has more texture-specific tips.
Texture-specific tweaks
Kinky curly
The thirstiest texture. Deep condition every wash, use heavier creams, and consider a light oil after leave-in to seal moisture. Read our glueless kinky curly guide.
Deep wave
Benefits from gel or mousse for clumping. Air-dry or diffuse on low. See our deep wave guide.
Water wave
Leave-in plus a light gel while soaking wet, scrunched, gives the signature wet look. See our water wave guide.
Curly (spiral curls)
Curl cream plus finger-coiling gives the most defined spirals.
Common wash day mistakes
- Washing tangled hair.
- Hot water — dries curls and loosens the pattern.
- Scrubbing and rubbing.
- Towel-drying with a rough towel.
- Brushing dry.
- Applying products to damp, not soaking-wet, hair.
- Storing it damp — leads to a musty smell.
- Using heat to dry on high.
How to revive a curly wig that's lost its pattern
If your curls have already gone frizzy:
- Do a full wash with a deep condition, as above.
- While soaking wet, apply leave-in and gel, and finger-coil every section.
- Air-dry completely on a stand without touching it.
If the pattern doesn't return after a careful wash, the hair may have heat damage — straightened curls often don't fully come back. Trimming the damaged ends can help.
Wash day, timed
Here's roughly how long each step takes for a mid-length curly wig, so you can plan your day:
- Detangling: 15–25 minutes, depending on how tangled it is.
- Washing: 10 minutes.
- Conditioning and detangling with conditioner in: 10 minutes.
- Deep conditioning: 20–30 minutes (hands-free).
- Rinsing: 5 minutes.
- Applying leave-in and stylers: 10–15 minutes.
- Air-drying: 4–8 hours, or 30–45 minutes with a diffuser.
Total hands-on time: about an hour. Plan to wash the evening before you need it, so it can air-dry overnight on a stand.
Choosing between curl cream, gel and mousse
Curl cream
- Result: soft, touchable, moisturised curls with moderate definition.
- Best for: kinky curly, curly and anyone with dry hair.
- Downside: less hold; may need refreshing more often.
Gel
- Result: strong definition and hold, glossy clumps.
- Best for: water wave, deep wave and defined spiral curls.
- Downside: can feel crunchy until you scrunch out the cast; builds up without clarifying.
Mousse
- Result: light hold, volume and bounce.
- Best for: deep wave, loose curls, fine curls.
- Downside: less moisture; pair with a leave-in.
Many people layer: leave-in, then cream, then a little gel for hold.
The "squish to condish" technique
A popular curly-hair technique that works well on wigs:
- With conditioner in the hair, cup a section in your palms with a little water.
- Scrunch upward toward the cap, squishing the water and conditioner into the hair.
- Listen for a squelching sound — that's the hair absorbing moisture.
- Repeat section by section.
- Rinse lightly or leave a little conditioner in.
It helps curls clump together and gives more definition once dry.
Plopping: drying with less frizz
Plopping is a way to absorb excess water without disturbing curls:
- Lay a microfibre towel or cotton T-shirt flat.
- Lower the wig's hair onto it, curls coiling down onto the fabric.
- Wrap the fabric up and around, holding the hair against the cap.
- Leave it for 10–20 minutes, then unwrap and let it air-dry on a stand.
On a wig, this is easiest with the wig on a block head.
Wash day for curly bundles
If you're wearing curly bundles in a sew-in, the routine is similar, with two differences:
- You'll wash on your head, letting suds run down the hair rather than piling it up.
- Dry your braids completely, with a hooded dryer or cool blow dryer at the scalp.
See our sew-in care guide.
Troubleshooting after wash day
- Curls look frizzy once dry — you may have touched them while drying, or applied products to damp rather than soaking-wet hair.
- Curls feel crunchy — scrunch out the gel cast with a drop of oil.
- Curls look limp — too much product, or heavy oils; use less next time and clarify monthly.
- The cap smells musty — it didn't dry completely. Dry the cap with a cool blow dryer next time.
More wash day questions
Can I wash a curly wig in a washing machine?
No. Agitation tangles and damages the hair, cap and lace. Always wash by hand.
How do I wash a curly wig with very heavy build-up?
Use a clarifying shampoo once, followed by a deep condition. Don't clarify every wash — it strips moisture.
Can I co-wash only?
Many curly wig wearers alternate co-washes with occasional shampoo washes. Co-washing alone can allow build-up over time.
The short version
Detangle before wetting. Wash in sections, smoothing downward. Condition generously and deep condition regularly. Apply leave-in and stylers while soaking wet. Air-dry or diffuse on low without touching. Refresh with water and leave-in between washes, and never brush dry.
