5x5 Closure Wigs: The Low-Maintenance Lace Wig Explained

A 5x5 closure wig gives you a realistic parting with a fraction of the lace of a frontal. Who it suits, how it compares with 4x4 and 13x4, and what to check before you buy.

A 5x5 closure wig is the lace wig for people who want a realistic parting without a full frontal's worth of lace to fit, lay and look after every day. It sits in a sweet spot: more parting room than a 4x4 closure, a fraction of the work of a 13x4, and usually a lower price than either a frontal or a 360.

If you've ever looked at lace front tutorials and thought "I don't want to do that every morning", a 5x5 is probably where you should be looking. This guide covers exactly what it gives you, where it stops, and how to buy a good one.

What a 5x5 closure is

A closure is a square patch of lace sewn into the top-front of the cap, where your parting sits. On a 5x5, that patch measures roughly 5 inches across by 5 inches deep. The hair inside it is hand-tied, so it can be parted and looks like scalp. The rest of the wig — sides, back and the hairline beyond the patch — is wefted.

That's the key difference from a lace front. A lace front (13x4, 13x6) runs ear to ear. A closure doesn't. With a closure, the hair at the sides of your face falls from wefts, so you wear it down and forward rather than swept back.

Sizes are nominal and aren't standardised across manufacturers. Our lace sizes guide draws each one to scale.

What a 5x5 lets you do

  • A middle part that looks like scalp, front to back across the patch.
  • A side part within the patch — five inches wide gives you room for a gentle side part either way.
  • A natural-looking hairline at the centre front, where people look most.

What it doesn't do

  • Swept-back styles. Pull the hair back off the face and the edge of the closure and the wefts at the sides show.
  • Deep side parts that run far off-centre.
  • High ponytails. For those you need 360 or full lace.

If those matter to you, look at a 13x4 lace front or a 360 lace wig.

5x5 vs 4x4 vs 13x4

  • 4x4 closure — a smaller patch. Enough for a middle part and a slight side part. Usually the lowest-priced lace wig construction on our comparison page. Read our 4x4 closure guide.
  • 5x5 closure — an extra inch each way. More room for a side part and a slightly more natural, wider parting area. Usually a small step up in price from a 4x4.
  • 13x4 lace front — ear-to-ear lace. Part anywhere, wear it back, show baby hairs along the whole hairline. More to fit, more to look after, and a higher median starting price. See our 13x4 guide.

For many people, 5x5 is the best balance of realism, ease and price.

Who a 5x5 closure suits

  • First-time lace wearers. Small enough to be easy to lay, big enough to look real.
  • Daily wearers who want a quick routine. Ten to twenty minutes from cap to styled, once you've done it a few times.
  • People who mostly wear a middle or modest side part.
  • Anyone protective of their own hairline. A closure sits further back from your edges than a frontal and needs less laying along the hairline, especially in glueless versions.
  • Budget-conscious buyers who want lace without frontal prices.

What to check on a 5x5 listing

Glueless construction

Many 5x5 wigs are built glueless — combs, adjustable straps and sometimes an elastic band — and they're ideal for the format. Glueless closures are some of the easiest lace wigs you can buy. Browse glueless wigs.

Lace type

HD lace for maximum realism at the part; transparent for durability. With a smaller lace area, transparent lace is often all you need. See HD vs transparent.

Pre-plucked parting

A closure's part should look slightly irregular, with fewer hairs right at the line, like a real part. Look for "pre-plucked" and check close-up photos.

Bleached knots

Dark knots on a closure part show when people look down at your parting. Bleached knots help, especially with dark hair.

Pre-cut lace

Many glueless 5x5s come pre-cut, so the lace at the front edge is ready to wear.

Density

180% is the common default. 150% looks closer to natural hair. Closures look most natural at moderate densities, because very high density makes the transition from lace to wefts more abrupt. See density explained.

Cap size

Check it matches your head measurements.

Fitting a 5x5 closure wig

A glueless 5x5 is one of the quickest lace wigs to put on.

  1. Flatten your hair with braids or a low, flat bun. Put on a wig cap close to your skin tone.
  2. Adjust the straps so it's snug.
  3. Place the wig with the front edge just in front of your hairline. Centre the closure over your natural part.
  4. Secure the combs.
  5. Lay the front edge with your fingers, then a melt band for 10 minutes.
  6. Part and style. Use a fine-tooth comb to create the part within the lace patch.

The hair at the front and sides will fall forward naturally, covering the edges of the closure. Our glueless fitting guide has the full routine and fixes for common problems.

Making a closure look its most natural

  • Keep the part within the patch. Use a mirror to find the edges of the lace before you choose where to part.
  • Use a cap close to your skin tone, so the part looks like scalp.
  • Dab a little powder or concealer on the part if the lace looks lighter than your scalp.
  • Add face-framing layers so the front looks like a haircut. Our cutting guide explains how.
  • Leave a few baby hairs at the front of the closure if the wig has them.

Styling ideas

  • Sleek middle part, straight — the classic closure look.
  • Soft side part with body wave — the wave covers any edge.
  • Curly with a middle part — curls naturally hide the transition between closure and wefts.
  • Half-up with a claw clip at the crown — keeps the front down while lifting the back.
  • Low ponytail with face-framing pieces left out — leave the front pieces down to cover the closure edges.

Which retailers to look at

Every retailer on Bulqq sells closure wigs, and 5x5 appears across most of them. If you want a wear-and-go glueless closure, Arabella Hair's range leans toward glueless wear-and-go caps more than most, by our comparison page's measure. Browse their range on the Arabella Hair brand page, or see every retailer together on the 5x5 closure wigs page.

Care

Closures are easier to care for than frontals, but the lace patch still needs gentle handling:

  • Wash the part gently, with diluted shampoo and fingertips.
  • Avoid flat-ironing right at the part — keep the iron moving and slightly away from the lace.
  • Don't scratch at the part with combs.
  • Store on a stand.

5x5 closure questions

Is a 5x5 closure good for beginners?

Yes — it's one of the best first lace wigs, especially glueless and pre-cut.

Can I side part a 5x5?

Yes, within the five inches of lace. A very deep side part will run past it.

Does a closure wig look less natural than a frontal?

Worn down, with a middle or modest side part, a good closure looks very natural. A frontal only looks more natural when you need what it adds: swept-back styles, deep parts, a visible hairline across the forehead.

4x4 or 5x5?

If budget is tight and you wear a middle part, 4x4 is fine. If you want room for a side part, 5x5 is worth the small step up.

How long does a closure wig take to put on?

With a glueless unit and some practice, around 10–15 minutes.

Reading a 5x5 listing: a worked example

"Glueless 5x5 HD Lace Closure Wig Straight Pre-Plucked Bleached Knots 180% Density 20 Inch"

  • Glueless — combs, straps, often an elastic band.
  • 5x5 HD Lace Closure — a 5x5 patch of the thinnest lace.
  • Straight — sleek; shows the parting clearly, so the hairline features matter.
  • Pre-Plucked and Bleached Knots — a natural parting with no dark dots.
  • 180% Density — full but natural.
  • 20 Inch — mid-to-long; straight hangs at its full length.

Getting the part exactly right

With a 5x5, the parting is the focus. A few techniques:

  1. Find the lace edges in a mirror and note where the patch starts and ends.
  2. Draw the part with a fine-tooth comb, staying at least half an inch inside the edges.
  3. Soften the line slightly with your fingertip.
  4. Lift the roots either side with a round brush, so the part doesn't look flat.
  5. Dab concealer on the part if needed.

For a side part, start the line at the outer corner of your eyebrow and angle it slightly toward the crown — still within the lace.

5x5 vs 7x5: a closer look

They look similar on paper; in practice:

  • 5x5 — a square patch. Great for middle parts and gentle side parts. Usually a little lower in price.
  • 7x5 — two inches wider. More room for a confident side part and more of the front hairline on lace. Often built as pre-cut wear-and-go units.

If you love side parts, the 7x5 is worth considering. Read our 7x5 and 6x5 guide.

A 5x5 for different lifestyles

  • Busy professional — straight or body wave, 16–20 inches, glueless, 150–180%.
  • Student — a bob or mid-length body wave; quick and affordable.
  • Natural hair protective styling — kinky curly or kinky straight, glueless, off every night.
  • Content creator — HD lace, pre-plucked, bleached knots, for close-up realism at the part.

Common 5x5 mistakes

  • Parting too close to the edge of the lace.
  • A ruler-straight part. Soften it.
  • Very high density. Makes the closure-to-weft transition more noticeable.
  • Not adjusting the straps before fitting. The closure ends up off-centre.
  • Sweeping it back. Shows the closure edges and the wefts at the temples.

More 5x5 questions

Is a 5x5 closure more natural than a 4x4?

The extra inch each way gives a wider, more natural-looking parting area and more side-part room.

Can I get a 5x5 closure in a bob?

Yes — 5x5 bobs are popular and very easy to wear.

Does a 5x5 work with curly hair?

Very well — curls cover the transition between closure and wefts naturally.

The short version

A 5x5 closure gives you a realistic part with a small, easy patch of lace. It's quick to fit, gentle on your hairline, usually lower-priced than a frontal, and suits middle and modest side parts worn down. It doesn't do swept-back styles or high ponytails. Buy it glueless, pre-plucked and pre-cut.
